At Brian Jackson College, our Construction module offers young people aged 16+ the opportunity to discover their potential, build confidence and develop practical skills that open doors to future employment and positive destinations.
Designed for students who benefit from a hands-on, practical approach to learning, Construction at Brian Jackson College is about far more than tools and materials. It is about helping young people recognise what they are capable of, often for the very first time.
Real workshops. Real skills.
Real choice.

Students engage in practical workshop sessions that replicate real working environments. A wide range of trade-related tasks is available, allowing learners to choose activities that suit their interests and abilities, while also challenging them to progress at their own pace.
Tasks are structured across levels of difficulty, meaning students can explore several trades and work towards completing units that complement their strengths. Projects often take place over several days, encouraging learners to build resilience, manage their time and see tasks through to completion.
This flexible approach enables young people to experience success early, while steadily developing the technical and employability skills needed for life beyond college.

Supportive learning that builds confidence
Students work independently on self-selected activities, supported throughout by experienced tutors and learning support workers. Workshop sessions are lively, engaging and purposeful, creating an environment where students feel safe to try new things and learn from mistakes.
As confidence grows, so does pride in their work. Construction students frequently comment on how surprised they are by what they have achieved — often expressing sentiments such as,
“I didn’t know I could do that,” or “I didn’t think it would look that good when I did it.”
These moments are central to the Construction programme. They represent shifts in self-belief that can be transformational for young people who may have struggled in more traditional educational settings.
High standards and genuine achievement
Construction workers are supported to work towards clear learning outcomes, producing work of good quality and to a high standard. Tutors take great pride in seeing students achieve things they once believed were out of reach, and in recognising the effort and determination that goes into every finished project.
Progress is celebrated not just through completed tasks, but through improved confidence, attendance, communication skills and readiness for the next stage of education or employment.

Preparing for the future
Construction at Brian Jackson College forms part of a wider curriculum designed to prepare students for life beyond college. The programme supports pathways into employment, apprenticeships, further training and other positive destinations, giving young people a clearer understanding of what their future could look like.
For parents, this means reassurance that their child is gaining meaningful skills in a supportive environment. For schools and local authority partners, it means a provision that demonstrates range, progression and tangible outcomes for young people who need something different to succeed.
